Cautious Approval For Fracking

The Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment has given a final tick for hydraulic fracturing, but says regulation needs to be improved especially as the industry expands beyond Taranaki.

Commissioner Jan Wright's final report on fracking –“Drilling for oil and gas in New Zealand: Environmental oversight and regulation” confirmed the practice was not a danger to the environment if managed properly. However there needed to be a National Policy Statement to help local authorities facing applications from oil and gas companies.

Wright repeated the caveat her report should not be seen as supporting greater exploration for oil and gas because of their impact on climate change.
