Commission Opening Of Parliament For October 20

The Commission Opening of Parliament has been confirmed for October 20 with the State Opening to take place the next day.

The 51st Parliament will be proclaimed by the Governor General with Commissioners attending on his behalf, usually the Chief Justice and two other judges.

The Chief Commissioner will read the proclamation and say the Governor-General will attend the next day to deliver the Speech from the Throne.

Following this the Clerk of the House will swear in new members who will elect a new Speaker.

The State Opening on October 21 will be dominated by the Speech from the Throne which explains the Government’s policy and legislative priorities for Parliament.

After the Speech there will be presentation of papers, petitions and bills. The election of a Deputy Speaker and Assistant Speakers could also take place, as could the reinstatement of parliamentary business if a notice of motion has been lodged on this or any other matters.

The Office of the Clerk says as well as the traditions from the past there will be several new additions to the ceremonies this time, which will be announced later.

Following the final election results this weekend, the writ must be returned to the Clerk of the House by October 9, unless it is delayed by a judicial recount.

The writ lists the name of every successful constituency candidate, based on the election results. The successful candidates are considered to be members of Parliament from the day after the return of the writ. A separate declaration is forwarded to the Clerk showing the names of the candidates elected from party lists. The returned writ and declaration together certify that the elected representatives have the right to be Members of Parliament.
