East Timor Ballot Registration Extended
The United Nations Mission in East Timor (UNAMET) has announced that voter registration period for the ballot on the territory's future has been extended two days until the end of this week.
The Secretary-General's Special Representative, Ian Martin, said registration centres inside East Timor would be kept open through Friday, 6 August, while registration centres in Indonesia, Portugal, Australia and elsewhere will remain open until Sunday, 8 August.
The extended period would not affect the ballot date of 30 August, Mr. Martin said.
More than 400,000 people have registered in East Timor alone, said Mr. Martin.
In New York, the spokesman for the Secretary General said the UN expected all provisions of the agreement included disarmament be honoured by all the parties and that no further delays in the ballot were expected. However the Secretary General would be making a full report to the Security Council on Friday about progress and the situation in East Timor
