Cape Town Pizza Bomb Blast Injures 50

Nearly 50 people were injured on Sunday after a home made pipe bomb exploded in a busy Cape Town pizza restaurant in the tourism heart of South Africa.

The bomb was hidden in a plastic bag under a table and exploded at 4pm.

Two people have injuries describes as critical and thirty were taken to hospital with cuts and lacerations caused by flying shrapnel. One person has sustained serious injuries to a leg.

Nobody has claimed responsibility for the attack and no clear motivation is obvious. The restaurant was full with a diverse crowd.

Cape Town was virtually in a state of siege a year ago after a bomb attack on Planet Hollywood which was followed by a series of other explosions. Most of thesewere attributed to a militant Muslim group, People Against Gangsterism and Drugs (PAGAD).

But the city has been relatively quiet since January when police launched a major offensive code named Operation Good Hope against the plague of urban terrorism that included direct attacks on police stations.
