Marlborough Drownings - TVNZ Pays Up - Police Car Kills Child - Peter Ellis - Tuvalu Fire Kills 17 - Presidential Race On - Americas Cup: Spys, Roadshow, Flight, Dunedin

MARLBOROUGH DROWNINGS: Drowning tragedy in the Marlborough Sounds. Two have died several, one is missing four people have been taken to hospital with the bends.

TVNZ PAYS UP: TVNZ has paid more than $6.5 million to news reader John Hawkesby. Hawkesby appears happy and plays Bob Dylan to reporters. He refuses all comment. Network Communications issued a statement on his behalf saying the last 15 months had been hard. The decision not to appeal the arbitration was forced by new chairman Ross Armstrong. Acting PM Jim Anderton says that personally he thinks the people who wrote Hawkesby's contract ought to be sacked. Ross Armstrong says the board is not minded to sack the news managers however.

POLICE CAR IN FATAL ACCIDENT: Child killed in New Plymouth accident involving a Police Car. The driver was a civilian. The mother of the child was injured and her child killed. Police Complaints Authority is to investigate the accident.

PETER ELLIS: The Government is to hold an inquiry into the Peter Ellis case. Justice Eichlebaum will have to decide whether to recommend an pardon. Ellis's mother says she is disappointed that a wider inquiry has not been ordered. She wants new evidence to be admissible. A spokesperson for the victims family say they are pleased that the inquiry will not focus on guilt or innocence but on process.

TUVALU FIRE KILLS 17: Seventeen girls killed in a dormitory fire in Tuvalu. The fire is believed to have been started by a candle. The girls were locked in and their guardians could not unlock the door in time.

PRESIDENTIAL RACE: Bill Bradley and John McCain have both announced that they are withdrawing from the primary race for the US Presidency meaning the main race is now on.

AMERICAS CUP SPYS? Team New Zealand has launched an inquiry to search for a spy inside their camp. They have employed Oynx International a firm of private investigators. The National Business Review has published a transcript of the PI's briefing.

AMERICAS CUP ROADSHOW: Christchurch and Dunedin get a visit from Team New Zealand. Generally a restrained parade in Christchurch. Russell Coutts turned up for this parade. Christs College do a Haka. Girls say they want to marry Dean Barker.

AMERICAS CUP FLIGHT: Russell Coutts has a shot at flying an Air Force Hercules over Timaru. Team describes the plane as a "character building tin can" - it is noisy.

AMERICAS CUP DUNEDIN: Audio problem prevents live cross……big turnout indicated by lots of ticker tape.
