PEOPLE SMUGGLING: The Dominion leads today with a report that a crime syndicate that police say traded in human misery spent five years smuggling hundreds of people into New Zealand, forcing some into lives of crime to pay off debts.

CRICKET: The front-page photo shows an ecstatic Daniel Vettori delighted to bag himself another wicket. Vettori has scored a remarkable 12 wickets in the first test against Australia at Eden Park.

- POLICE REVIEW: a report that the government said yesterday it had halted the review of police that was a “festering sore” on police morale;

- SOUTHERLY BLAST: a report that a strong southerly moving through Cook Strait last night caused the cancellation of Tranz Rail’s Lynx fast ferry, and dampened spirits at the final performance of the Edinburgh Tattoo.

- STRANGE WEDDING: a report that Bryan Gerrard will not forget the day he played in a band at a South Canterbury wedding reception. The marquee at Geraldine caught fire, despite the torrential rain, and an old man dropped dead and then was revived by a doctor. Later Gerrard was stopped driving drunk.

- PROBATION SCANDAL: a report that two women probation offices allegedly involved in a drugs for favours scandal had been suspended and a male officer sacked after separate sex accusations, the Community Probation Service said yesterday.
