Henergy Eggs Ltd and DOC partner for Mt. Bruce Restoration

17 February 2012

Henergy Eggs Ltd and DOC partner for Pukaha Mt. Bruce Restoration Programme

What started out as an offer of assistance over a cup of tea has resulted in a successful long-term conservation partnership in the Wairarapa.

The owners and staff of Henergy Eggs Ltd, which is located just outside Masterton, were recently presented an award recognizing their support of the forest restoration programme at Pukaha Mt. Bruce. Henergy Eggs has been supplying eggs as lures for the predator traps at Pukaha Mt. Bruce since 2003.

The award was presented by Department of Conservation ranger Joe Hansen. Graeme Napier, owner of Henergy Eggs, received the award.

“We are proud to support the restoration programme at Pukaha Mt. Bruce. The values of a healthy forest for wildlife are very similar to the Henergy ideals of looking after the health and welfare of our animals,”said Mr. Napier.

Bruce Vander Lee, biodiversity programme manager for the Department says, “Since Henergy started supporting the restoration programme in 2003, nearly 550 stoats, 250 ferrets, and 9000 rats have been killed by traps in the reserve. As a result of this predator control, we have been able to return kaka, kokako, and kiwi to the forest.”

The relationship between DOC and Henergy Eggs started when ranger Hansen who at the time was a neighbour, approached Mr. Napier about supplying eggs as lure for the trapping at Pukaha Mt Bruce.

Mr. Hansen says ‘It has been great working with Graeme and the Henergy staff. This is a great example of how the community and businesses can support conservation in their local area.”
