Cashmere Avenue School turns 75

Cashmere Avenue School turns 75

In 2015 Cashmere Avenue School will celebrate its 75th Jubilee. On 29 July 1940 Cashmere School officially opened as a side school to Khandallah School. Cashmere started off as a junior school with pupils attending until they were about eight years-old before travelling to the big school up the road. With the growth of the suburb, the school became its own entity in February 1968 and became Cashmere Avenue School (so as not to get confused with Cashmere School in Canterbury).

Situated on Cashmere Avenue, (the street most locals call one of the windiest in Wellington) the school boasts fantastic views across the harbour and down the Khandallah valley. During its 75 years it has seen many changes, not only to the school and the way education has changed but there have been many changes to the growing suburb. Starting with 83 children in 1940, Cashmere Avenue School now has over 300 pupils on its roll.

To celebrate 75 years the school will be holding events during Labour weekend (23 and 24 October 2015) and invites past pupils, staff and anyone associated with the school to register for these. Events include an icebreaker evening on Friday, Cashmere Day in the afternoon of Saturday with present staff and students being involved in the day and finishing off with a dinner and dance on the Saturday evening. For those interested in registering further information can be found on www.cashmere-ave.school.nz . This is a great opportunity for those with ties to Cashmere Avenue School to come along and see the school, catch up with old friends and reminisce.
