DAM: The natural dam on the Poerua river burst this morning, flooding the Poerua valley. Fourteen families were evacuated but they are all safely back in their homes now. Their were no casualties or stock losses.

PROTEST: Auckland students have occupied their registry building to protest over soaring fees and Dunedin students staged a rally and marched to the National Party HQ.

PETROL: Petrol prices at BP, Shell and Caltex will drop by three cents a litre tonight.

SOLDIERS: Kiwi soldiers in Est Timor have had their daily allowances doubled to $78. Australian troops still get $140.

TAX: Tax is running second equal in importance as an election issue according to a TV3 CM Research poll.

CANCER: The parents of a 13 year old who died of cancer are upset to learn they are being investigated for not providing adequate medical care. The family say their religion had nothing to do with their sons treatment.

CRIME: Crime dropped by three per cent across the board in the last year but nine out of ten burglaries still do not get solved.

BOUMAU: The trial of four men charged with murdering Reparoa woman Beverly Boumau was adjourned early today after counsell requested a meeting in chambers.
