ACT AND RANGITIKEI: The government says the ACT parties call for a recount in Rangitikei is a political stunt. ACT says serious questions have been raised into the integrity of the ballot. Labour’s Mark Burton however says it is a “vexatious stunt”. Prebble said the recount is to ensure votes do not go missing in the future.
PARTY HOPPING: Green Party Co-Leader Rod Donald said the Greens will not support the party-hopping bill as important constitutional issues are raised by it.
HOME INVASION: Home Invasion legislation is full of anomalies says Justice Minister Phil Goff. Some lawyers say the retrospective nature of the legislation may breach the bill of rights.
SEXUAL ABUSE TIME BAR: A woman who has been told by the Court of Appeal she cannot make a civil claim against her sexual abuser because of a time bar says she hopes that legislative reform may fix the problem. The woman’s stepfather was jailed for three years and ordered to pay her $10,000 – she wants more.
MIDDLE EAST PEACE: President Clinton urges Israelis and Syrians to put the horror of war behind them. Syrian Foreign Minister spoke with some optimism about leading to a peace agreement.
