Nats pledge support for Hauraki Gulf Marine Park

10 February 2000

Former Conservation Minister Nick Smith has welcomed the Government's move to put the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park Bill before the House next week, ensuring the new park will be able to be enjoyed by those viewing and participating in the America's Cup.

"National put a huge amount of work into the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park Bill and I am pleased to see that it is on its final leg. We will support the efficient passage of the Bill through the House to ensure it is passed as soon as possible and that Auckland can capture the advantage of the America's Cup bring hosted in a new Marine Park."

"National was frustrated last year that Labour chose to withdraw its support at the last minute, essentially because they did not want National to get credit for the three years that had gone into developing the Park legislation. National will not play political games with Auckland's treasures and will be true to its word to fully cooperate with the Government in having the Bill passed as quickly as possible."
