EMPLOYMENT SHOULD BE FAIR AND NEUTRAL
New Zealand First has welcomed the move to improve the situation for some low paid workers but emphasised that the best industrial law favours neither the employers nor the unions.
Employment Spokesperson, Peter Brown, said today that under the Employment Contract Act employers had the opportunity to put in place a fair, balanced industrial environment.
“Most did just that but far too many employers regarded the ECA as the opportunity to put the boot in.
“Regrettably, although privately the National party and employer’s organisation recognised this problem, nobody was prepared to stop unfair practices.
“As a result many lower paid employees lost a lot of their basic rights and in some cases all their job security.
“On the other hand, highly skilled and highly motivated people have benefited under the ECA.
“So, in summary, New Zealand First welcomes the opportunity to examine the industrial relations environment.
“We hope that at the end of the day we have an environment which is fair, provides for flexibility and is politically neutral,” concluded Mr Brown.
