Death of Dame Ruth Kirk

Death of Dame Ruth Kirk

Prime Minister Helen Clark said today she was saddened to learn of the death of Dame Ruth Kirk, widow of the late Labour leader Norman Kirk.

Helen Clark said Dame Ruth had stood behind Norman Kirk support as his political career progressed from the Kaiapoi mayoralty to Parliament, and eventually to the prime ministership.

"Dame Ruth was a parliamentary partner in the days when there were no electorate secretaries and very little other backup support for MPs. As an MP's wife, she herself carried out many public duties and contributed to public life.

"The Government extends its deepest sympathies to Dame Ruth's family and friends on this sad occasion," Helen Clark said.
