New Zealand First fisheries spokesman Doug Woolerton today attacked the Green Party initiative to promote a ban on fishing Patagonian and Antarctic toothfish.
“It is ideologically driven, devoid of commercial sense and ultimately very harmful for fish stocks.
“Not only would such a ban costs jobs in New Zealand and deprive New Zealand companies of sharing in an internationally available harvest, there would be absolutely no reduction in the vessels fishing the sector or the amount of fish stocks caught.
“New Zealand vessels currently fish the Ross Sea fishery in conjunction with other nations under the Convention for Conservation of Antarctic Living Marine Resources (CCAMLR).
“Any New Zealand vessels removed from this fishery as a consequence of this nonsense proposition by the Greens, would quickly be replaced by vessels from other nations including Chile and Portugal,” said Mr Woolerton.
