Pardon for old soldiers welcomed

Green Party MP Ian Ewen-Street today welcomed the Government's commitment to pardon five soldiers who were executed during the First World War, saying the move had full Green support.

The five New Zealand soldiers were executed for mutiny but it has since surfaced that they suffered shell-shock and illness. Labour MP Mark Peck has a private members bill which pardons the men.

"I congratulate the government for proceeding with Mark Peck's bill and I applaud the member and acknowledge his many years of hard work on this issue," said Mr Ewen-Street.

"Finally now there will be some closure for the families of these men and justice will at last be done."
