Beekeepers should be compensated for destroyed hives
Beekeepers must be compensated if they have to destroy hives as part of the strategy to control the varroa honeybee mite, National Agriculture spokesperson Gavan Herlihy said today.
"I totally support the Beekeepers' Association in their call for compensation," Mr Herlihy said.
"These emergency conditions require an emergency response from the Minister.
"The future of New Zealand's honey production and other primary industries that depend on bees for pollination cannot be put at risk while the Minister procrastinates.
"If a pesticide approach is the way forward, it is vital that the registration of Apistan pesticide strips be approved immediately.
"Agriculture Minister Jim Sutton and Environment Minister Marian Hobbs must give this serious biosecurity emergency their total and immediate attention," Mr Herlihy said
