Greens congratulate Council on regional rail focus

Greens congratulate Council on regional rail focus

Wellington Green Party MP Sue Kedgley congratulated the Wellington City Council for its far sighted decision not to support fast tracking Transmission Gully and focus on upgrading the region's rail system instead.

"The Council is to be congratulated for looking beyond the hype, doing its own research and working out that Transmission Gully will not benefit Wellington city," she said.

"It would generate so much extra traffic it would paralyse Wellington's central city streets with traffic and ruin the inner city," she said.

On the other hand, investing in a high speed public transport between regional centres would benefit the economy and environment of Wellington city and the entire region, she said.

Ms Kedgley said it was now time for the Council to look at its own roading folly, the by-pass more closely.
