Robson's Done It Again With Amnesty Idea
Matt Robson has done it again with his suggestion of an amnesty for Pacific Island overstayers, National Immigration spokesperson Marie Hasler said today.
"His idea is clearly out of line with Government policy. Within hours of the publication of his comments, both the Prime Minister and the Immigration Minister, Lianne Dalziel, have publicly closed him down.
"Regardless of the merits of this idea, it's unfair on the Samoan community to raise these sorts of expectations, and confusing for everybody.
"Talk about a 'selective' amnesty is appalling. Any kind of amnesty for overstayers would need to be carefully developed, publicly debated and based on clear principles.
"The confusion over the Government's immigration policy must be cleared up immediately.
"First there was sex behind bars, then rapists in home detention, now this idea about an amnesty.
"It's obvious that Matt Robson is a lameduck Minister. His ideas simply aren't worth listening to," Ms Hasler said.
