What Does Helen Clark Now Know That She Should Have Known Since Becoming Labour Leader? - Peters
Dover Samuels appears to have been denied the justice that is the right of every citizen, said the New Zealand First Leader, Rt Hon Winston Peters.
“Our very existence in this Parliament is based on the rule of law and order.
“As the highest court in this land Parliament is the foundation of our democracy and it behoves us ill to deny one of our own members the justice that we have all sworn to deliver to every citizen.
“It probably is, amidst all the controversy, the right course for Mr Samuels to resign as Maori Affairs Minister but this is a country with a record of natural justice and he should have had the result of the police findings before such a decision was made.”
He pointed out that when Mr Samuels took leave, Helen Clark pledged he would be reinstated if the Police found no basis to the allegations of wrong doing fourteen years ago.
“I am concerned that the situation has suddenly changed and Mr Samuels has now been told to go irrespective of the outcome of the police investigation or other facts being made public.
“This is totally different to the Prime Minister’s earlier position and it seems that she is bowing to mob rule.
“Mr Samuels is gone but without all the facts on the table who really knows why,” said Mr Peters.
