National withdraws support for arms bill

National MPs on the Law and Order Select Committee have withdrawn their support from the Arms Amendment Bill.

Labour have already indicated they are unlikely to support the Bill, making it seemingly inevitable the Bill will be thrown out.

"On the basis of submissions heard by the committee we have decided the Bill is not workable, and would not deliver the desired safety benefits," National's Police Spokesman Brian Neeson said today.

"We remain committed to pursuing any policies which will make a difference in terms of firearms safety.

"Any proposals put forward will be closely scrutinised by National's representatives on the select committee," Brian Neeson said.
