Sex Offenders Register Ugently Required

“A register of sex offenders is urgently needed for the protection of our children” said New Zealand First Education spokesperson, Hon Brian Donnelly.

“Such a register must be readily accessible by those making decisions about who should work closely with children”.

The way we operate early childhood centres and schools has dramatically changed. Employment decisions have been devolved to local boards of parents. In many cases of short term or part-time employment, busy principals make decisions.

On top of this our institutions have been encouraged to open their doors to the community. The results of these changes has been to heighten the risks to our children.

“Those who oppose such a proposal as a sex offenders register seem to be totally concerned about the rights of the offenders and ignore the greater responsibility –the protection of our children,” Mr Donnelly said.
