Hon Bill English

National's Finance spokesman Bill English said today he would be contesting the Deputy leadership of the National Party.

"My top priority is a win for National in the 2002 election, by which time the Labour -Alliance Government will have been doing nothing for two years.

"Jenny Shipley will lead National into the next election with my full support, whether or not the caucus elects me Deputy Leader.

"Over the next week I will be seeking caucus support, and I welcome a vigorous contest if others are interested in the position," Mr English said.
