Anderton Not Attending Sevens
Friday, 2 February 2001, 2:20 pm
Press Release: New Zealand Government

Alliance leader and Deputy Prime Minister Jim Anderton is
giving the rugby sevens tournament in Wellington a miss this
year.
He attended last year, and would have liked to have
gone again this year, but he says it's more important to
send Fiji a message.
"The democratically elected
government of Fiji was removed at gunpoint. It is important
for Fiji to know that it cannot do that and get away with no
international repercussions.
"If I went to the tournament,
it would send at least an equicoval message about turning a
blind eye. I'm not prepared to do that," Jim Anderton
said.

Gordon Campbell: On the Sony cyber attack
Given the layers of meta-irony involved, the saga of the Sony cyber attack seemed at the outset more like a snarky European art film than a popcorn entry at the multiplex.
Yet now with (a) President Barack Obama weighing in on the side of artistic freedom and calling for the US to make a ‘proportionate response’quickly followed by (b) North Korea’s entire Internet service going down, and with both these events being followed by (c) Sony deciding to backtrack and release The Interview film that had made it a target for the dastardly North Koreans in the first place, then ay caramba…the whole world will now be watching how this affair pans out.
