Opposition Leader Jenny Shipley has today extended her sincere condolences to the family of former Governor General Sir David Beattie, who died suddenly last night.

"I was shocked and devastated to learn of the sudden death of Sir David," Mrs Shipley said today in a letter to Lady Norma Beattie.

"Sir David has left a magnificent legacy, for his grace, leadership and stewardship," she said.

Jenny Shipley says her thoughts and prayers are with Lady Beattie and her family.
