Where’s The Charter, Steve?
Friday, 23 February 2001, 1:58 pm
Press Release: ACT New Zealand
|
Steve Maharey says he will spend the next few weeks
"identifying" key policy issues in his new broadcasting
portfolio.
ACT Broadcasting spokesman Penny Webster
saved the Minister time today by telling him exactly what
is required.
"First, Mr Maharey needs to fix the chaos
that the inept Marian Hobbs caused,” said Mrs
Webster.
"When cleaning out Hobbs’ desk, Mr Maharey should
throw out the TVNZ Charter.
"He should also drop forced
local content. We are in a commercial environment, and TVNZ
must stay competitive.
"Ideally, the Government should
sell TVNZ.
"Mr Maharey has a great opportunity to be
more sensible, instead of following Ms Hobbs’ politically
correct ideology", Penny Webster said.

Gordon Campbell: On the Sony cyber attack
Given the layers of meta-irony involved, the saga of the Sony cyber attack seemed at the outset more like a snarky European art film than a popcorn entry at the multiplex.
Yet now with (a) President Barack Obama weighing in on the side of artistic freedom and calling for the US to make a ‘proportionate response’quickly followed by (b) North Korea’s entire Internet service going down, and with both these events being followed by (c) Sony deciding to backtrack and release The Interview film that had made it a target for the dastardly North Koreans in the first place, then ay caramba…the whole world will now be watching how this affair pans out.
