Marian Hobbs is back to her old tricks after just one day back in the job, ACT Broadcasting Spokesman Penny Webster said today.

“Ms Hobbs has already resumed her ‘mind control’ talk, signalling she learned nothing during her month-long break from the Broadcast portfolio.

“She has renewed her charge to push through New Zealand quotas for radio and television.

“Ms Hobbs is bent on telling New Zealanders what we can and cannot do in our own time.

“We do not need Ms Hobbs, through quotas, telling us what to watch on our own televisions, or listen to on the radio.

“Ms Hobbs ignores the simple fact that the highest ratings in this country already belong to New Zealand-made shows. She ignores the success of local television production companies, and she ignores the renaissance that local music has experienced – has she heard of the Runga sisters, Zed, or Breathe?

“Fundamentally, Marian Hobbs ignores our basic right to choose what we want to watch on television, or listen to on the radio. New Zealanders will not put up with her attempt at mind control,” Penny Webster said.

Given the layers of meta-irony involved, the saga of the Sony cyber attack seemed at the outset more like a snarky European art film than a popcorn entry at the multiplex.

Yet now with (a) President Barack Obama weighing in on the side of artistic freedom and calling for the US to make a ‘proportionate response’quickly followed by (b) North Korea’s entire Internet service going down, and with both these events being followed by (c) Sony deciding to backtrack and release The Interview film that had made it a target for the dastardly North Koreans in the first place, then ay caramba…the whole world will now be watching how this affair pans out.
