Corrections Law Review consultation to be launched

Corrections Law Review consultation to be launched

The law covering Corrections is being modernised, and the Corrections Minister Matt Robson is asking the public to have a say.

The consultation will include an opportunity for victims to have their say, with the Corrections Department planning focus groups with victims organisations.

The Penal Institutions Act was passed nearly fifty years ago. Since then it has been amended frequently, and other laws have been passed such as the Criminal Justice Act. These laws are being re-written to consolidate corrections laws into a single Act.

Tomorrow Matt Robson will launch a public consultation document asking for public input into the purpose and principles underpinning corrections law, and seeking comment on the way offenders are managed.

He will be available to news media to comment on the document:

Time: 4.00PM, Wednesday, 2 May 2001

Venue: Matt Robson's office, Level 6, Bowen House, Parliament.
