New funding for participation in fisheries management
The Budget will provide $50,000 to help environmental groups participate in the Environmental Management Strategy being developed by the Ministry of Fisheries.
The Strategy will help ensure that the environmental principles of the Fisheries Act – requiring sustainability, maintenance of biodiversity and protection of significant habitat – are given proper effect in fisheries management.
Announcing the funding today, Minister of Fisheries Pete Hodgson said the initiative arose from a proposal by the Green Party.
It would be funded from within the Ministry of Fisheries' existing baseline.
Ministry of Fisheries staff will contact environmental groups shortly to discuss the process to obtain funding.
