New youth unit at Christchurch Prison
Making teenagers safer in prison and reducing re-offending…
Corrections Minister Matt Robson will open a new specialist youth unit at Christchurch Prison tomorrow.
The youth unit is a self-contained facility for inmates who have been have been sentenced to prison but are being kept away from other inmates because of their age and vulnerability.
A new $3.3 million gatehouse is also being opened.
Media Note: The Youth Unit is not the same as Youth Justice Centres. They house offenders too young to be sent to prison, or who have been directed into Youth Justice Centres as an alternative to prison.
