Independent Body Should Review MMP

The MMP review committee's report shows the futility of asking MPs to decide how they should be elected, ACT leader Richard Prebble says.

"We should get an independent group to review the electoral system," Mr Prebble said.

"I'd like to see the Royal Commission reconvened, to see if MMP is working as they expected.

"I personally found the report disappointing, particularly the committee's refusal to even consider the issue of whether we need special Maori seats. When the Royal Commission recommended MPP, it was with the idea that it would remove the need for Maori seats.

"I believe we still need to look at whether we need 120 MPs, particularly in light of the petition by Margaret Robertson which called for fewer members.

"This report will satisfy no one. I predict public opinion will eventually force Parliament to set up an independent body to do the review properly," Mr Prebble said.
