Children's Day should be a celebration for all children

Children's Day this Sunday should be a celebration for all New Zealand children, but, inevitably, many will miss out, National's Social Services spokesperson Bob Simcock said today.

"Sadly, children who most need the support of an adult who cares will be the ones least likely to get the attention they deserve on Sunday. We should give some thought to what we can do as a community to help these children.

"Many young people will still be abused and neglected, even though it is Children's Day. This pattern of behaviour will continue to produce angry, illiterate children who cause trouble at school and break the law. It is a tragic waste.

"Much of this could be stopped if New Zealanders were more committed to investing in our young people. We need to recommit to early prevention programmes like 'Family Start'. We need to provide child protection services that really do put the needs of children first. We need to ensure that anyone who works with children is fully competent to do so.

"Most of all, we must help every young New Zealander grow up with a clear understanding of the responsibilities of parenthood and the needs of children.

"What we don't want is more consultation and working parties. We must make a difference for children who would otherwise find that Children's Day is just another miserable day in their lives," Mr Simcock said.
