Democrats Support Caucus Decision

13 November 2001 Media Statement

Democrats leader John Wright says his party is very comfortable with the position the Alliance has adopted on the deployment of SAS troops to the international action in Afghanistan.

The Democrats are a party inside the Alliance. John Wright is a founding member of the Alliance and a former Chairperson of the Alliance Council.

“Suggestions that the Alliance caucus is out of step with the views of the members are wrong,” John Wright said.

“The Alliance conference voted for a lengthy resolution that expressed commitment to the fight against terrorism. It rejected an amendment calling for the caucus to withdraw its support, which means ‘review’ should not be re-interpreted as a call to withdraw support. It means that there should be a review based on the facts.

“Members who are disappointed that they lost the vote on Saturday are entitled to their views, but they do not speak for the majority of Alliance members,” John Wright said.
