Pork Barrel Politics At Its Worst
“The Minister of Education, Trevor Mallard, engaged in the pork-barrel politics of the crudest order at the opening of Manaia View School last Friday,” says NZ First spokesperson, Brian Donnelly.
The Minister announced that he was going to make a grant of $10,000 to the school for the purchase of T-shirts for every child.
“In explaining his largesse, the Minister said that neither the Education or Treasury officials knew anything about this grant he was making and that the money would be coming from surpluses from the re-organisation of the Wainuiomata schools.”
The financial reforms of the late 80’s and early 90’s were specifically put in place to prevent Ministers from electioneering with tax-payers money.
“Trevor Mallard is taking this Labour-Alliance government back to the days of baby bonuses,” said Mr Donnelly.
