Transport Minister Not Off The Hook
Wednesday 13 Mar 2002
ACT Transport Spokesman MP Penny Webster responded to news that car dealers cannot take legal action against the Minister for creating unfair car standards by saying Mark Gosche is not off the hook.
"I have lodged a complaint with the Regulations Review Select Committee. I intend to speak to the hearing. The two hundred car dealers angry enough to pursue legal action against Mr Gosche can now focus on the Committee hearing.
"The Minister is effectively making it illegal to import most vehicles manufactured in Japan before 1996. Lower income families will suffer as car prices will increase and families will hold onto their unsafe cars longer.
"The Minister of Transport ignored the facts.
" Advice prepared for the Minister by the Land Transport Safety Authority stated the costs of implementing the rule would outweigh the benefits, and the rule would actually lead to a decrease in the safety level of the New Zealand vehicle fleet.
"Mr Gosche introduced the new rules against advice, and against all common sense," Mrs Webster said.
