Government Ignores Boy-Racer Solutions
Confiscating cars is only part of the solution to the problems caused by boy racers, says National's justice spokesperson Wayne Mapp.
"Promoting a single piece of legislation as the sole answer smacks of grandstanding, rather than a thoughtful approach to the problem.
"What is needed is a multi-pronged attack, including more frontline police, and giving local authorities the power to declare alcohol-free zones. This would mean fixing last year's botched legislation.
"In Counties-Manukau there are around 50 vacant frontline positions. There is no point in calling for police to confiscate cars when there are no police to do it.
"If the Government was serious about confiscating cars they would promote it as a Government bill, rather than leaving it to the lotto draw of a private members ballot," said Dr Mapp.
