Minister Hasn't Read His Own Report
It is a real worry that the Minister of Corrections doesn't understand what "early intervention" for at-risk kids is, says National's Social Services Spokesperson Bob Simcock.
"Early intervention is not about teenagers, it is about reaching children at-risk in the first few years of their life. Matt Robson's new programmes for at-risk teenagers are valiant, but they are too late.
"Programmes like Family Start, started by National, work with at-risk families before the birth of a child through to the age of five. This kind of scheme needs to be expanded and supported, rather than putting ambulances at the bottom of the cliff.
"The Minister's own report on youth offending "About Time" says that waiting until teens are in trouble will cost many times as much per child, and be less effective than a genuinely early intervention. If he would read his own reports he would know this," said Mr Simcock.
