Bioreactor claim misleading

Bioreactor claim misleading

Jeanette Fitzsimons, the co-leader of the Greens, misrepresents the Royal Commission on Genetic Modification when she argues that the Commission recommended that animals not be used as bioreactors, Environment Minister Marian Hobbs said today.

A bioreactor is a genetically modified organism, plant or animal that can be used to produce medicines, as was seen on television last night.

The Royal Commission recommended that wherever possible, non-food animals, or animals less likely to find their way into the food chain, be used as bioreactors rather than animals that are a common source of food.

"The wish behind that was to separate animals produced for food from animals used as bioreactors," Marian Hobbs said. "I am confident that ERMA would see such a separation as highly desirable especially since we are taking such care with food labelling."
