Dunne: Recreational fishers must not be left high and dry
United Future leader Peter Dunne today championed the cause of the huge number of New Zealanders who enjoy recreational fishing, when he warned the Government to make sure their rights are protected as it claims ownership of the seabed and foreshore.
"As I said yesterday, it is important that the Government move urgently to clarify ownership of the seabed and foreshore, but it is also vital that the rights of your average Kiwi to throw a line in the water are treated as sacrosanct," Mr Dunne said.
"The Government must protect the right of all New Zealanders to enjoy the great outdoors of this land.
"That is truly a 'customary right' that we have all inherited, and it is to be treasured," he said.
