The Censor Is Right This Time
“This will possibly surprise many people but I believe the Censor was right when he classified the controversial film ‘The Passion of Christ’ as R16,” said New Zealand First Deputy Leader, Peter Brown.
“I have had my differences with Mr Hastings in the past and I, therefore, believe I should acknowledge it when he makes a correct decision.
“All reports about this film suggest that it is not suitable for young people because of the extreme violence portrayed on the screen. There is a vast difference between reading about the crucifixion in the New Testament and gratuitous violence on film. The censor has obviously recognised this,” said Mr Brown.
“I have significant concerns about the display of graphic violence on the screen or television, whoever the victim is,” concluded Mr Brown.
