Maori Seats Must Go: Hide
Thursday 15 Jul 2004
Press Releases - Treaty of Waitangi & Maori Affairs
ACT New Zealand Leader Rodney Hide today welcomed the
news that the National Party is considering not
contesting the Maori seats at next year's general
election.
"I am pleased that National Leader Don Brash
is considering not standing candidates in the Maori
seats. These seats are an anachronism and are racist.
People should not be granted special voting privileges
based on their ethnicity.
"We'd be horrified at the
thought of white-only seats. The Maori seats are just as
wrong. Political parties should show their contempt for
our race-based laws by refusing to stand in them," Mr Hide
said.

Gordon Campbell: On the Sony cyber attack
Given the layers of meta-irony involved, the saga of the Sony cyber attack seemed at the outset more like a snarky European art film than a popcorn entry at the multiplex.
Yet now with (a) President Barack Obama weighing in on the side of artistic freedom and calling for the US to make a ‘proportionate response’quickly followed by (b) North Korea’s entire Internet service going down, and with both these events being followed by (c) Sony deciding to backtrack and release The Interview film that had made it a target for the dastardly North Koreans in the first place, then ay caramba…the whole world will now be watching how this affair pans out.
