Arafat leaves legacy of hope to his people
The Green Party says the legacy of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat will be a homeland for his people.
"Mr Arafat took up the struggle when his people were dispersed in refugee camps scattered around the Middle East," said Green Party Foreign Affairs spokesperson Keith Locke. "His life's work was to re-establish his people in a sovereign homeland.
"At the time of his death there was still much to be achieved but his single-minded determination has advanced the realisation of Palestinian nationhood.
"New Zealand should give strong support to Mr Arafat's successor in helping overcome the resistance of the Sharon administration to the establishment of a truly independent Palestinian state."
