Unions should target Labour on tax says Mapp

National Party Industrial Relations spokesman Wayne Mapp says unions should be targeting the Labour Government if they’re unhappy workers haven’t been getting their share of the buoyant economy.

“Labour could be putting more money in the pockets of every worker by offering tax cuts. Employers would have more room to give workers wage rises if Michael Cullen cut company tax too.”

National has pledged to bring down taxes.

“The union movement has declared war on National, yet it is their allies and regular sponsors - the tax and spend Labour Government - which is denying their members a fair share,” says Dr Mapp, who hopes the latest campaign doesn’t signal a return to the dark old days of strikes and stoppages.

“Let’s hope that the unions are responsible and reasonable in the way they negotiate with individual businesses that may struggle to deliver a 5% pay rise to staff.

“Otherwise, Margaret Wilson’s ‘one size fits all’ legacy of Multi-Employer-Collective-Agreements could end up costing some employers their businesses and many workers their jobs,” says Dr Mapp.
