John Tamihere should have been charged over cats

National Party Clevedon MP and cat lover Judith Collins says John Tamihere should have been charged for abandoning his two cats when he left his west Auckland house last month.

"I don't care who you are, there's no excuse to treat domestic cats in this way.

"Mr Tamihere appears to have escaped charges because he belatedly signed the animals over to the SPCA. In my view this is insufficient. He is an elected representative and he's in a Government that passes laws about animal cruelty. He should face the consequences of his actions.

"I do hope that at least some of Mr Tamihere's colleagues have the good conscience to reprimand him for this behaviour," says Ms Collins.
