Education unions run up the white flag

Education unions run up the white flag

Education unions have already surrendered the education debate to National, judging by their insipid ad campaign, says National’s Education spokesman, Bill English.

He is commenting on full page advertisements placed by education unions for the second week in a row.

“It’s no wonder the ads say nothing of value,” says Mr English.

“The unions cannot back Labour’s policy of bigger bureaucracy, lower standards and Wellington bureaucrats telling parents what to do. No advertising genius could make those policies look attractive.

“Nor can they attack National’s policy of standards, choice and excellence in education, because these policies are widely supported in the community.

“The unions know their scare campaign about funding under National won't work, when under Labour parents and schools raise half a billion dollars a year to pay for free state schools.

“Labour and the unions will run a vicious campaign in New Zealand’s school staffrooms, where their support is leaking away. But these ads show they have already lost the public debate,” says Mr English.
