Taxpayer-funded charm offensive "offensive"

Labour's taxpayer-funded charm offensive "offensive"

Ken Shirley Tuesday, 5 July 2005 Press Releases - Taxation

ACT MP Ken Shirley has branded “offensive” the Labour Government’s use of almost half a million dollars in taxpayers’ money for their mid-winter charm offensive.

“They announced last month they were doing a mid-winter charm offensive to win back support. But what they didn’t tell us is that, like their bus-stop adverts, this would be mostly paid for using taxpayers’ money,” Mr Shirley said.

“That must be where the ‘offensive’ bit comes in. Taxpayers will find it offensive.

“After having had to pull down all their bus-stop adverts, I would have thought they’d be more careful about taxpayer-funded propaganda”.

Mr Shirley says Helen Clark has used taxpayers’ money to write to every superannuitant in the country peddling Labour’s political messages.

He estimates that would have cost at least $300,000.

He also claims she’s sent a letter to every small business, which would have cost another $100,000.

“That’s nearly half a million dollars of taxpayers’ money spent pushing Labour propaganda down people’s throats.

“No wonder they say they can’t afford to give people tax cuts,” Mr Shirley said.
