National: free local calls will stay in place

National Party Communications spokesman Maurice Williamson gave a categoric undertaking today that the free local phone calls regime would stay in place under a National Government.

"This will not be changed,” he said.

Mr Williamson was clarifying reports in The Dominion Post today in which he said it was time for a serious review of the Kiwi Share Obligation (KSO).

One aspect of the KSO requires Telecom to provide free local phone calls. The paper headline interpreted Mr Williamson's comments on the review as "free local calls may get the chop”.

Mr Williamson said he was in favour of the review, but a National Government would not change the free call aspect of the KSO.
