Microchipping issue may get the debate it deserves

The Green Party is pleased that its one law for all dogs Bill was pulled from the Parliamentary Ballot today.

Co-Leader Jeanette Fitzsimons says her Dog Control (Cancellation of Microchipping Requirements) Amendment Bill will see all dogs, except those deemed to be dangerous and menacing, exempt from microchipping.

"I call on United Future to support this Bill to select committee so that the public will have the opportunity to share their views and give this issue the consideration that it deserves.

"This means the House will be able to look at microchipping in isolation without having to consider a package of other dog control measures as was the case last time," Ms Fitzsimons says.

This Bill is intended to ensure the issue gets to a vote in the House, as it is possible that Metiria Turei's amendment, tabled in the Local Government and Environment Select Committee today, could still be ruled outside the scope of its present deliberations.
