Parliament senses mood for Easter trading change

National MP Jacqui Dean says Parliament’s support for sending two Easter trading Member’s Bills to select committee shows that Parliament has finally caught wind of the strong desire for change within the retail sector.

The bills are promoted by Mrs Dean and Labour MP Steve Chadwick.

Mrs Dean says that though the bills differ significantly in terms of execution, their intent is the same.

"Tourism is a 365-day-a-year industry. It is one of New Zealand’s largest contributors to both gross domestic product and goods and services tax.

"My bill recognises the nature of the tourism and retail environments in communities with a significant visitor industry.

"If enacted it will allow operators to meet the demand of tourists and shoppers over the Easter period.

“It can be only good news that interested parties now have the opportunity to debate the issue before the select committee and get the best possible legislation,” says Mrs Dean.
