Clarkson lays complaint with Speaker

Tauranga MP Bob Clarkson has laid a privileges complaint with the Speaker against senior Government Minister Trevor Mallard after an alleged assault in Parliament on Thursday.

"He crossed onto National's side of the Chamber, stood behind my seat, and whack," says Mr Clarkson.

Mr Clarkson is ruling out a police complaint "because they have far more important things to do, like catching crooks.

"If I'd done this to a Labour MP they'd have me before Privileges at 90 miles an hour." National Party Senior Whip Lindsay Tisch says the Speaker must act to uphold standards in the House.

"So it's appropriate we follow the proper process and lay a privileges complaint."
