National offers support to police in difficult time
Former detective and National Party Police spokesman Chester Borrows is offering his support to police caught up in the Graeme Burton shooting rampage.
“Thankfully in New Zealand police are seldom called on to exercise the last resort option of using a firearm. In my experience they never do so lightly and when they do, they know they will be under intense public scrutiny.”
Mr Borrows says the details of the past 48 hours be scrutinised intensely by the media and the public.
“The reality is something appears to have gone horribly wrong in this case at the parole stage. It would seem that police have been the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff yet again.”
Mr Borrows says police are doing a difficult job in increasingly dangerous times.
“From time to time officers expect to put their own lives on the line for public safety. After an incident like this they deserve our support.”
